Sharon Wells
Sharon is a feltmaker. She sources wool from Irish sheep farms, washes, cards, dyes and uses it for felting, spinning, knitting and weaving.
Sharon loves to teach and has introduced the ancient art of wet felting to hundreds of students of all ages and abilities. She also teaches needlefelting, hand embroidery, machine embroidery, peg loom weaving, wool dyeing and coiled basket making.
She is very well known for her felted pictures which are built from layers of textural hand dyed wool fibres, silk and wire. Sharon’s work is embellished with hand and machine embroidery.
Sharon has a natural curiosity and love of the Irish landscape, especially County Kerry where she is from and County Wicklow, where she lives now.
She has a background in Archaeology and combines this with felting to honour the natural landscape, by creating a multi-textural experience. Sharon is fascinated by the antiquity of wool and textiles, their origins and uses, and the ability of a craft to transport us into the minds of our ancestors. If you visit Sharon’s studio prepare to stay for a few hours and become enthralled by the endless creative possibilities of wool. Sharon’s new work is a celebration of Irish natural bogland. She is creating sculptural work using wool sourced from Irish sheep farms.
